Life has a funny way of nudging us when it’s time to realign with our purpose. Whether it’s burnout, an unforeseen challenge, or a shift in direction, the universe sends signs to remind us to reflect. This is as much true in business as in life. When it comes to your business, checking in with your purpose can reignite passion, clarify goals, and set you up for long-term success. If the universe has been subtly – or not so subtly – urging you to look inward, here are five steps to help you assess your current path and realign with your business’s purpose.
Step 1: Stop and Listen
Early in my time in the industry, I had the privilege of working with a business coach named Nancy Starr, who had a brilliant mind and the ability to say exactly what you needed to hear. She once said, “if you feel like something is about you, it probably is, and that means you should probably listen to the message it’s sending.”
I’ve taken that idea to heart. Any time I read something about relationships or achievement that’s uncomfortable, for example, I try to consider why that is and what I should do about it. Feeling stuck, disconnected, or facing challenges in your business might be the universe’s way of telling you to pause. These signals are opportunities to reflect and ask yourself: Why did I start this business in the first place? Tune into these moments, and let them guide you toward revisiting your “why.” Taking a step back allows you to reconnect with your passion for your business. It can help motivate you to take the necessary actions to be the best leader, decision-maker, or entrepreneur you can be.
Step 2: Revisit Your Core Values
It’s no secret that your core values are the foundation of your business purpose, but it can be easy to drift off-course if you’re mired in the day-to-day. Take a critical look at your current operations (leadership approach, work ethic, etc.) and reflect on your values. Are you staying true to your mission? If not, what steps need to be taken to correct course? Are you willing and able to take those steps? Reconnecting with your values is crucial in rediscovering your true purpose. The good news is that when you’re in line with your values, decision-making becomes so much easier because you weigh every decision against whether it gets you closer to or further from your values.
Step 3: Communicate Your Purpose Clearly With Your Team
Once you’ve rediscovered your purpose, make sure it’s visible in everything you do. From internal culture to external marketing, your purpose should be clear and inspiring. Your team needs to believe in it, and your guests need to feel it. This alignment gives your business a powerful narrative that drives success. Use these resources to help:

Step 4: Align Your Purpose with Your Guests

Success rooted in purpose isn’t just about short-term wins; it’s about sustainability. When your business operates with clear purpose and direction, it’s easier to innovate, adapt to change, and grow in meaningful ways. You’ll be better equipped to navigate challenges, knowing that your decisions are grounded in your core mission. What can you do to ensure you stay committed to your purpose? Do you need regular check-ins and assessments? How can you involve your team? How? How often? Put time on the calendar to revisit periodically so you can be sure you stay on track. This will set your business up for a number of positive outcomes, such as:
- Stronger Team Engagement: Staff is motivated and committed when they understand and connect with the company’s purpose and you’re talking about it and taking actions in support of it on a regular basis.
- Guest Loyalty: Consumers today gravitate toward businesses with a clear mission that aligns with their values
- Sustainable Growth: It may not seem obvious, but purpose-driven businesses tend to stay more connected to their market, remain nimble and are more likely to stay relevant in a constantly shifting market.
Taking time to regularly check in with your business’s purpose isn’t just about introspection—it’s about staying on course for long-term success. By listening to the signs the universe is sending, you can realign your goals, refresh your passion, and re-energize your team. Committing to purpose-driven growth empowers your business to stay relevant, foster deeper connections with your guests, and build a sustainable path forward.
